How Louis XIII and Martin Scorsese saved a century-old film

The cognac brand has partnered with Scorsese’s Film Foundation and the director Joanna Hogg to restore a classic silent film first released in 1919 If you were a keen film-goer in the US in 1919, you almost definitely would have enjoyed The Miracle Man, a silent Paramount production eight reels long that told the story of four confidence tricksters who use faith healing to try to swindle a small Massachusetts town and which became the most popular of the year (it made more than twice its nearest competitor). Or, you might have bought a ticket for DW Griffith’s Broken Blossoms, perhaps based on the reception of his (highly controversial, even then) The Birth Of A Nation four years earlier, the film widely regarded as rehabilitating the image of the Ku Klux Klan. And you might also have seen The Broken Butterfly, a film by French director Maurice Tourneur that follows the tragic love story between a young woman who becomes the muse of a composer, plus his tribulations after she drowns herself in a river alongside their lovechild – or does she? Statistically, it’s very likely you would have seen all three. Weekly cinema attendance in the mid-Twenties hovered around 50 million, ris...

Use Apple Health to See if Your Headphones Are Too Loud When Connected to Your iPhone « iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

Although the Health app mostly focuses on fitness, Apple has slowly added features to help with other aspects of well-being, including hearing. In iOS 13, there’s now a headphones volume tracker in Health that monitors audio levels and lets you know when your music, podcast, movie, or whatever else is too loud. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over one billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to extended exposure to loud sounds. That includes audio from those headphones connected to your smartphone. It may not seem like a significant issue, but the irreparable damage that can occur to your hearing is something that may last forever (barring medical procedures) — so it’s essential to know if you’re listening to audio from your iPhone in a healthy manner. If you’ve never used the Health application, all the information regarding your headphone audio levels most likely won’t be available from the Summary home page. To add these metrics to your favorites (for easier access), tap on “Edit” at the top right under your profile photo, then hit the star icon next to “Headphone Audio Levels” u...

I have some aluminum building-set parts on hand and just got a second rotary tool, so I thought I’d try my hand at making a light-duty CNC mill—maybe carve up some cheap pine or make circuit boards. This post explores some of the early decisions I’m facing as I begin the project. Of primary importance is the basic format of the mill’s chassis. Gantry configuration or put everything in a box of girders? How will the axes move–belts or racks? How will the Z-axis work, the assembly that lowers the tool onto the material? Finally, once the chassis is complete, or perhaps beforehand, I’ll need to figure out how I intend to control the thing. The main building blocks I’m using to build my mill consists of a building set called Actobotics. The set includes a variety of beams, most especially the hole-studded channels you can see in the image to the right. They also dabble in a T-channel profile as well as mini-channels used for smaller projects. The line also includes mounts for a variety of standard steppers, servos, and DC motors, plus all the clamps, adapters, bearings, and axles you need. Their entire product line works together and that’s sort of why I chose it–that and also becau...

Think that custom aluminum extrusions aren’t affordable? The FABRICATOR STAMPING Journal The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal The FABRICATOR en Español The Additive Report The FABRICATOR The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal STAMPING Journal The Additive Report The FABRICATOR en Español

While steel is a material of choice in many industries, including construction, aluminum has a lot to offer. Known for its weight, strength, durability, corrosion resistance, low maintenance, and finish options, aluminum can help a product designer or an architect get to destinations that steel can’t reach. As one of the most recycled industrial materials, it also makes a substantial contribution to sustainability efforts. Extruded aluminum components are well-suited for use in door frames, windows, curtain walls, canopies, sun shades, light fixtures, and handrail systems, and while aluminum is readily available in many off-the-shelf profiles, this isn’t the end of the road. If you’re looking for something unique or distinctive, custom extruded profiles offer nearly endless opportunities to create something new and unique. You might hesitate to venture into unkno...

The industrial insulation market is projected to grow from USD 2. 6 billion in 2019 to USD 3. 3 billion by 2024, at a CAGR of 5. 0%. The increasing demand for electricity owing to rapid urbanization, growing population, and rising requirements of power & energy in emerging economies are the major drivers for the industrial insulation market. New York, Jan. 22, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Reportlinker.com announces the release of the report “Industrial Insulation Market by Form, Material, End-use Industry And Region – Global Forecast to 2024″ – https://www.reportlinker.com/p05791872/?utm_source=GNW Another factor driving the industrial insulation market is the strict regulations mandating the use of industrial insulation to conserve energy and achieve efficiency in operations. However, the fluctuations in the availability and prices of raw material, low awareness about the application of insulation, and increasing use of renewable energy sources such as Solar PV can hinder the growth of the market.Mineral wool segment is expected to be the fastest-growing material for industrial insulation, during the forecast period.Mineral wool is an inorganic insu...

It has all the makings of a delicious smoothie – a dollop of almond butter, an avocado, a few slices of mango, a handful of blueberries, a sprinkle of cocoa powder and perhaps a glug of soya milk. As a tasty, vegan-friendly drink to start your day, it is packed with nutrients and will do wonders for your health. But it may be doing far less good for the planet. There is no doubt that meat – beef in particular – makes an unsurpassable contribution to the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. It also devours more land and water and causes more environmental damagethan any other single food product. The recent rigorous report by the EAT-Lancet Commission recommends reducing our consumption of animal products to not only benefit human health, but the health of our planet. Even the “greenest” sources of meat still produce more greenhouse gases than plant-based proteins. But anyone looking to adopt a vegan or vegetarian diet for environmental reasons may also want to consider whether there are some plant-based foods that also come with a heavy price. “Nothing really compares to beef, lamb, pork, and dairy – these products are in a league of their own in the level of damage they typically...

When’s the last time you washed your pillow? Probably not recently enough. The best machine-washable pillows

When’s the last time you washed your pillow? Probably not recently enough. The best machine-washable pillows are easy to clean so you can stop worrying about the consequences (like acne or clogged pores) of not routinely washing your pillow. While a pillowcase certainly helps to protect your pillow from the sweat, oil, and dead skin cells from your body, you should still wash your pillow at least twice a year, especially because all of that stuff can soak through the case. When it comes to picking out the best machine-washable pillow, you should first make sure that the tag doesn’t say “dry clean only,” which means that it’s not going to hold up in the harsh washing machine. Down or feather pillows and polyester pillows are usually safe picks to be machine washed, while memory foam or other foams usually cannot be. From there, pick a pillow based on your desired firmness and price. The actual pillow-washing part is pretty easy. It’s a good idea to read the instructions first for the specific settings, but in general, all you have to do is wash your pillows in pairs (if your machine is large enough to handle it) and use a mild detergent (Consumer Reports recommends using a ...

This Perfect 1971 Datsun Z-Car Just Sold For Ferrari Money

The Datsun 240Z literally came out of nowhere. The Japanese automaker, at least in America, was typically known for building relatively small and fuel-efficient cars. It wasn’t a bad reputation to have, but a certain someone at Datsun, which later became Nissan, had a better idea for America. His name was Yutaka Katayama, also known as “Mr. K”. He not only convinced Datsun executives to set up shop in the US, but also to import the original Fairlady sports coupe, renamed the 240Z for the American market. This front-engined coupe became an instant hit. Mr. K clearly understood what Americans wanted, meaning a less expensive alternative to the likes of the Chevrolet Corvette. The Z car is still alive and well today, sold as the Nissan 370Z. Word has it the next-generation Z car is not only happening but will feature retro-like styling and, perhaps, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60. We remain hopeful. But that’s not the only bit of interesting Z car news. This perfectly kept 1971 Datsun 240Z has just sold on Bring A Trailer for an astounding $310,000. It has only 21,750 miles on the original 2.4-liter straight-six engine, which is g...
