Flour power: meet the bread heads baking a better loaf | Food

The best thing since sliced bread turns out not to be sliced bread. Our supermarket loaf, which accounts for 80% of all the bread bought in the UK, is sweetish, soft and pappy. The ingredients listed on the plastic sleeve include added E-numbers, enzyme “improvers”, extra gluten, protein powders, fats, emulsifiers and preservatives. It is baked according to the Chorleywood process (named after the location of the lab where it was invented) developed in the 1960s for speed, from grain that has been milled between steel rollers, removing the germ where the oils and nutrients reside, and the bran husk where the fibre is, leaving only the endosperm, a pure starch so nutritionally void that by UK law vitamins must be added back into white flour. Mechanised food factories demand ingredients that are standard, stable and easy to transport, and make products that are standard, stable and easy to transport. New wheats have been bred for high yields and high protein content that require inputs of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. To increase efficiency, hedgerows and copses have been eliminated and farmland agglomerated into increasingly larger tracts of monoculture. From soil to plast...

The Shanghai Edition Hotel Has the City’s Best Skyline Views

See giant balloons, gorgeous floats and a slew of celebrities in a special 360° livestream broadcast by Verizon. When it comes to skylines, Shanghai knows how to impress. From the Oriental Pearl Tower, which looks like a spaceship with its massive domes, to the Shanghai Tower, rising over 2,000 feet above China’s financial capital, this city has some seriously defining buildings. But while it’s truly mind-boggling to stand underneath these massive structures, they’re best observed from across the Huangpu River. And one hotel might just have the most stunning views of them all — bathtub included. At the Shanghai Edition — part of Ian Schrager’s powerhouse brand of luxury hotels with a laid-back vibe — the sweeping views of the city will pull you in, but the comfort and character of the hotel will make you want to stay forever. And on a recent trip, I got to experience Shanghai’s coolest hotel firsthand. Tucked away on Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s answer to New York’s Fifth Avenue or Paris’s Champs-Élysée, the signature scent of the hotel created by Le Labo drifts past chic shoppers and tourists. The lobby — accented in soft beige hues and sheer curtains against royal blue velv...

A Proper MITX Case: SilverStone RVZ03 Mini-ITX Review | GamersNexus

SilverStone’s RVZ03 isn’t new, but after years of ATX case reviews we have quite a backlog of promising small form factor cases. The RVZ03 is part of the Raven line, a loosely related group of “extreme enthusiasts chassis” that could also be called “the ones that have a V-shape on them.” We recently revisited the RV02, one of the best-performing full size cases we’ve reviewed. It’s a thin, console-like enclosure, typically shown standing vertically, but also capable of being laid on its side Taku-style. The ubiquitous Vs on the front are clear plastic backlit with RGB LEDs hooked up to a controller; the controller can accept input from a standard 4-pin RGB header and includes adapters to control normal LED strips as well. * 2.5″ drive on center bracket may be difficult or impossible to install due to power supply cable interference, we recommend using 140mm deep or shorter modular power supply with flat cables ** Maximum length for power supply is 150mm but we recommend 140mm deep power supply due to varying connector locations and the unique structure of RVZ03.Due to the use of internal power cord extension, we recommend not to exceed 800W when powering off a 110V outlet ...

Whole body vibration: a genuine therapy or just another ‘weight loss’ fad?

Associate Professor in Exercise Physiology and Research Associate of Institute of Sport Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL), Victoria University Nigel Stepto is affiliated with the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS), The Institute of Sport Exercise and Active Living and Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation. He is also full member of Exercise and Sport Science of Australia (ESSA) and an ESSA accredited Exercise physiologist, which includes roles on their national research committee. Vibration machines have popped up in gyms alongside traditional equipment, and manufacturers claim ten minutes of vibration a day can be equivalent to an hour spent working out. Standing on a rapidly shaking platform will, according to claims, improve muscle tone and circulation, and accelerate weight loss. It’s an appealing prospect: passively standing on a platform and doing, well nothing, while your body seemingly tones and loses weight on its own. But is there evidence these vibration machines actually work as they say they do? Whole body vibration therapy was initially developed for athletes to improve the effectiveness of their training. Vibration platforms w...

The annual SPS IPC Drives show in Germany is probably the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to

The annual SPS IPC Drives show in Germany is probably the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to developments in automation. We look at some of the highlights from the most recent event, held last November. The SPS IPC Drives show which took place last November in Nuremberg, Germany, was the last ever with that name. When the exhibition returns later this year, marking its 30th anniversary, it will be known simply as SPS. While the original name was derived from the German equivalent of PLC, SPS will in future stand for Smart Production Solutions. The organisers argue that a “hardware-centric” name such as SPS IPC Drives “no longer reflects the true core of current and future automation technology” which is shifting to software-based function blocks distributed across a wide range of hardware components. The final event under the old name attracted 1,630 exhibitors and 65,700 visitors to Nuremberg. There were 30 fewer exhibitors and 4,564 fewer visitors than the record numbers achieved at the 2017 show – perhaps reflecting the downturn in the German manufacturing sector. One of the dominant themes at the 2018 event was TSN (Time Sensitive Networking). Suppliers were falling ove...

Dark Horse’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Graphic Novel Series Is The Fourth Season We Never Got

Dark Horse’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Graphic Novel Series Is The Fourth Season We Never Got Xbox just had their best XO presentation ever, and it wasn’t even close. Here’s a rundown of the best announcements from XO19. Microsoft had a lot to prove going into its fifth annual XO showcase. Console launches are on the horizon, cloud competitor Google Stadia is about to ship to early adopters, and Game Pass subscribers are as hungry as ever for new additions to the lineup. Then there’s the fact that XO has always been looked down upon by the gaming community in general as a lackluster, padded presentation. All of that changed with XO19. This was, by far, the best XO in the event’s history. In fact, it featured more shocking reveals and genuinely impressive announcements than a good deal of Microsoft’s recent E3 press conferences. From new IP reveals, to first-time looks at gameplay, to a couple “I never would’ve believed you a week ago” shockers, it’s clear that Xbox stepped up its game from years past. Here’s our list of the best announcements of the show. It’s not too often that we get to experience a new IP from Rare. Their last attempt, Sea of Thieves, was a fully multipla...

Walmart’s not waiting for Black Friday 2019: Deals are live now

This article, Walmart’s not waiting for Black Friday 2019: Deals are live now, originally appeared on CNET.com. Walmart is getting a head start on Black Friday, which falls on Nov. 29 this year. The retailer has already launched a bunch of worthy discounts on TVs, tablets, video games and other popular gifts for the 2019 holiday season. Smart shoppers know that there may be lower prices ahead, but that it’s worth taking advantage of early sales — before the most in-demand products sell out and the busyness of Thanksgiving takes hold. That noted, Best Buy has burst out of the gate with its own pre-Black Friday sale, which kicked off Thursday morning with some epic deals on a range of Apple products. In fact, it’s offering better prices than Walmart on some iPad models and the Apple Watch Series 4, as noted below. We continue to comb through all the deals at both stores, posting the Walmart highlights below and other deals at our Best Buy roundup. Take a look and check back often, as we’ll be adding new discounts and updating prices and availability on a regular basis. We bought one of these throwback Instax cameras for my daughter last year, and it t...
