With the stated intent of combating illegal immigration, Senators Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) are crafting new legislation to institute a national identification card. The card would be required in order to be eligible for employment, and would in turn enable employers to identify and reject illegal immigrants who are seeking work. The card would be biometric, i.e., containing identifying characteristics unique to the physiology of the cardholder. In this case the biometrics would most likely be comprised of either a fingerprint or a scan of the veins on the back of the hand. This is not the first time a biometric card has been proposed: in the wake of 9-11, there was a strong push for a national ID card on the basis of national security. Schumer and Graham claim that the institution of a national ID would not be accompanied by the creation of a complementary database; however, no national identification system has ever operated independently of a database. APM Terminals will open new truck gates at its New Jersey facility next year as part of a major capital project aimed at easing the congestion that many drivers experienced during the 2018 peak shipping season and boosting overall freight volumes. Giovanni Antonuccio, manager of client services at APM’s Port Elizabeth terminal, said the new inbound gate complex is “90% done” and should be open at the end of the first quarter of 2020. Port Elizabeth previously had 10 inbound and 10 outbound lanes. The new gate complex will have 24 inbound lanes with 16 outbound lanes. The gate complex sits on 15 acres of the Elizabeth marine terminal that had been used as a chassis depot. Those chassis operations have since been moved over to the Columbia Group-owned Elizabeth Chassis Depot.  The truck gates at the Elizabeth marine terminal have been in place since 1968, Antonuccio said, and have not been able to keep up with the volumes currently going through the terminal.  “The current antiquated gate is indeed a challenge for truckers at times,” Antonuccio said. Allplastics Engineering collaborated with Ceramic Façade Systems to custom-fabricate opal acrylic ‘bricks’ for the diffused lighting effect on the entrance wall of a new apartment development in Sydney. Opal acrylic bricks were machined and glued to diffuse the LED lights on the newly built apartments. A mixed-use development comprising of 91 residential dwellings and seven retail lots above three levels of basement car parking, The Place is located in the Sydney suburb of Ashfield in the inner west, amidst an eclectic collection of historical buildings, lively eateries and stunning urban art. Differentiated fibrocytes assume a functional mesenchymal phenotype with regenerative potential

Fibrocytes (FCs) are hematopoietic lineage cells that migrate to sites of injury, transition to a mesenchymal phenotype, and help to mediate wound repair. Despite their relevance to human fibrotic disorders, there are few data characterizing basic FC biology. Herein, using proteomic, bioenergetic, and bioengineering techniques, we conducted deep phenotypic characterization of differentiating and mature FCs. Differentiation was associated with metabolic reprogramming that favored oxidative phosphorylation. Mature FCs had distinct proteomes compared to classic mesenchymal cells, formed functional stromae that supported epithelial maturation during in vitro organotypic culture, and exhibited in vivo survival and self-tolerance as connective tissue isografts. In an in vitro scratch assay, FCs promoted fibroblast migration and wound closure by paracrine signaling via the chemokine CXCL8 (interleukin-8). These findings characterize important aspects of FC differentiation and show that, in addition to their role in wound healing, FCs hold potential as an easily isolated autologous cell source for regenerative medicine.
