Home Portrait: New, three-story home on Bedford cul-de-sac – News – Lexington Minuteman

The builder spared no expense creating this three-story family home. It’s big, but not ostentatious or cavernous. Each of the rooms is finished with luxe details such as eye-catching pendant light fixtures and impressive millwork. The outdoor foundation is rimmed with fieldstones so you don’t see concrete, and there are two granite lamp posts that decorate the front and back yards. The front door is heavy wood, opening into an oak-floored hall with a half-bath and coat closet. The foyer has pastel wallpaper with a grasscloth look. To one side is a chic office facing the street, and to the other side is the living room. It features a dramatic light fixture and large windows on the street. The ceilings throughout the first floor are 9 feet so the space feels airy. There is a wide arched room divider between the foyer and the living room. All the halls on both floors are extra wide. The interior doorways have transoms above, which look distinctive and let in lots of light. The dining room is toward the back of the house, with a walk-through butler’s pantry between it and the banquet-sized kitchen. The pantry has a bar sink, lighted cabinets and a beverage fridge. And if more storag...

When that fateful morning comes that your car no longer roars to life with a quick

When that fateful morning comes that your car no longer roars to life with a quick twist of the key, but rather groans its displeasure at the sad state of your ride’s electrical system, your course is clear: you need a new battery. Whether you do it yourself or – perish the thought – farm out the job to someone else, the end result is the same. You get a spanking new lead-acid battery, and the old one is whisked away to be ground up and turned into a new battery in a nearly perfect closed loop system. Contrast this to what happens to the battery in your laptop when it finally gives up the ghost. Some of us will pop the pack open, find the likely one bad cell, and either fix the pack or repurpose the good cells. But most dead lithium-based battery packs are dropped in the regular trash, or placed in blue recycling bins with the best of intentions but generally end up in the landfill anyway. Why the difference between lead and lithium batteries? What about these two seemingly similar technologies dictates why one battery can have 98% of its material recycled, while the other is cheaper to just toss? And what are the implications down the road, when battery packs from electric veh...

Soon, Machines Like EMSculpt Will Do Your Exercise for You

In the future, machines like the EMSculpt may do your exercise for you. And frankly, they’ll be better at it. In the future, machines like the EMSculpt may do your exercise for you. And frankly, they’ll be better at it. “Some people call it ’roids without the rage,” explains Dr. Ryan Neinstein, a board certified plastic surgeon on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. He’s describing a new technology that zaps his patients’ abdominal and gluteal muscles to the tune of thousands of crunches and squats in one session. “We like to say it’s ‘athletic meets aesthetic.’ ” The FDA-approved EMSculpt machine sends high-intensity, focused electromagnetic waves into the body, provoking intense muscle contractions in select areas. It can be uncomfortable, but it’s not painful—and there’s little soreness afterward. Unlike the similar e-stim “As Seen on TV” staples of late-night infomercials, according to Neinstein, after four visits in two weeks, his clients see results. A clinical study of 22 users showed that patients experienced an average 20 percent reduction in body fat in that time, and a 15 percent increase in muscle in their stomachs and butts. While the device isn’t ...

Bitcoin Rich List: 1,000+ BTC Wallets Are The New Normal

A tweet from Glassnode has highlighted that the number of Bitcoin wallets holding more than 1,000 BTC has increased by more than 500 since last year, and now stands at almost 2,100 separate wallets. As shown in the chart below, more bitcoins are now locked in the 1,000 BTC to 10,000 BTC bracket than any other ‘order of magnitude’ classification. And the total supply of bitcoins locked in wallets that contain over 1,000 BTC has increased steadily as well, from 6,919,950 in September 2018, to 7,184,501 in January 2019, and to 7,530,446 today. In many ways the chart raises more questions than it answers. What is the reason for this increase? Why does it happen in large, almost vertical spikes? The chart below takes snapshots of the distribution of bitcoins in September 2018; January 2019; and now. The chart shows the total amount of BTC held in each balance category. The table highlights that the first major spike between September and January may be attributed to diversification of wallet addresses: 1M BTC flowed from large 10,000+ wallet balances to the smaller 1,000+ BTC range. The reason for this  may be purely of a practical nature, similar to compartmentalization in submarine...

Opus Unveils First Off-Road Trailer With Massive Outdoor Kitchen

We all know Opus from its collaboration with Nissan. By using old Leaf batteries and installing them on Opus pop-up campervans (and integrating a 400-watt solar cell into the roof), the battery pack can go on for seven days without charging. This time, however, Opus is out on its own and created its first off-road hard-sized trailer called OP 15′. This 15-foot (4.6-meter) long trailer is the first hard body type from the brand and biggest one yet, trumping over the previous OP 2 and OP 4 trailers – perfect for your next motorhome. The Opus OP 15′ features a 300Watt solar energy system that’s connected to three 100-ampere-hour AGM batteries. Opus didn’t mention how many days you can go on without charging with this system, however. Aside from its off-the-grid power system, the OP 15′ has a full off-roading capability. It has an articulating hitch that sits at the end of the galvanized steel chassis, plus the trailer has twin shock absorbers and trailing arm independent suspension for each wheel. The trailer also comes with a set of 265/75R/16 mud tires and an underbody anti-chip protection. CJX2-D AC Contactor The rough-looking yet sleek exterior of...

TRENDING:       Boozy ice cream       Large cruise ship       Fall beers       Southie guide       Gronk Whose spirit will be summoned with the help of the what’s being touted as the world’s largest ouija board? Those visiting Salem on Saturday are about to find out. Dubbed “Ouijazilla,” the fully-functional board was created by New Jersey-based tattoo artist Rick Schreck, who also serves as vice president of the Talking Board Historical Society. The colossal wooden board, which can be separated into pieces for easier transportation, was loaded onto a truck to make the trek to Salem, where it will make its spirited debut at 1 p.m. at the Salem Common. The board reportedly weighs 9,000 pounds – that’s 4 ½ tons for those doing the math – Schreck said in a video on the historical society’s Facebook page. It’s also long enough that five 18-wheel trucks could park atop it, according to the organization’s website.  The planchet – the part of the board that moves when people place their hands on it – stretches 15 ½ feet and weighs 400 pounds, Schreck said in an interview with Talking Board Historical Society’s director Karen Dahlman. “The board that I used, actually, to replicate is t...

“Our factory and farm yard looked like a graveyard of all kinds of agricultural machines,” remembers

“Our factory and farm yard looked like a graveyard of all kinds of agricultural machines,” remembers HempFlax CEO Mark Reinders. Victims of an early flurry of trial and error harvesting and processing hemp fiber, the idle machinery was a reflection of the dream of HempFlax visionary Ben Dronkers, who founded the company in 1993. “Ben founded HempFlax mainly to prove to all the skeptics that hemp could be a modern industrial crop,” Reinders said. Dronkers had been active in the cannabis industry for decades, and he knew the extent to which hemp had been used for industrial purposes in the past, Reinders noted. “When we started operations in the early ‘90s, nobody knew how to harvest or process hemp because the crop had been forbidden for 60 years,” Reinders recalled. As a result, no technological advancements for harvesting and turning hemp into products had been made for decades. “We first tried to process hemp in a flax mill on a traditional flax scutching line (the genesis of “Flax” in the company’s name),” Reinders said. “Very soon we found out that hemp processing needed specialized technology” – technology robust enough to handle what’s generally considered to be the tough...

Spotlighting Campus Security at Saint Martin’s University

College life is unique. You live with and among people of different goals and backgrounds, discovering your place in the world. It’s not unusual for students to get preoccupied with classes and homework, clubs, teams and sports. This is where university faculty, staff and administrators are crucial. They work, often behind the scenes, to keep everyone healthy, happy and safe. At Lacey’s Saint Martin’s University, one recent improvement isn’t glaringly obvious but would be conspicuous in its absence. Improvements to more than 120 outdoor campus lights have made paths, parking lots, and walkways safer and clearer, and will ultimately save the school money as well. “As a college campus we’re always looking at security concerns,” says Director of Public Safety Will Stakelin. During the 2017-2018 school year, a student survey indicated an increased level of worry about inadequate campus lighting. A focus group was organized that included members of the Office of Public Safety, Facilities Department, faculty, staff, and student government members to look into the issue. “The students clearly voiced their concern, and the institution quickly responded,” says Stakelin. “This project wou...
