Using Solar to Displace Fossil Fuels for Process Heat in Industrial Facilities

Farms, factories and other industrial businesses require a lot of heat. Solar thermal startup Skyven Technologies wants to help. The craft beer industry could be an ideal market for solar thermal technology to edge out natural gas. The industrial sector — everything from factories to food producers to oil refiners — accounts for one-third of U.S. primary energy demand, according to the Department of Energy. At many of these facilities, fossil fuels, and especially natural gas, are the energy feedstock used for process heating applications. Dallas-based startup Skyven Technologies recently completed the first installation of its Intelligent Mirror Array (IMA). The system, deployed at Copses Farms, a state-of-the-art robotic dairy farm in Valley Falls, New York, uses solar thermal collectors to raise the temperature of water used to sanitize the facility’s self-cleaning milking robots. The IMA systems installed at Copses Farms will supply enough heat to produce 50,000 gallons of hot water each year. The solar thermal collectors supply heat previously provided by burning propane and wood, according to Skyven’s founder and CEO Arun Gupta. Skyven Technologies was the $1 million grand...

One in five S’poreans anxious over tech impact on job: Survey, Economy News & Top Stories

Singaporeans are the second-most nervous about the future impact of technology on their jobs in an 11-country survey, tied with Britain and only behind France, said global professional services firm PwC yesterday. One in five Singaporeans (18 per cent) is concerned about how technology will affect his job, with over half (54 per cent) thinking it is likely that their roles will be made obsolete or significantly changed by automation over the next 10 years, the survey found. Singaporean workers are also the most likely to accept a lower-level position in another company or industry if they believe their jobs are at risk of automation – 60 per cent of them compared with the survey average of 47 per cent. Being a smart nation whose government and private sector are adopting technology quickly makes Singapore’s jobs more susceptible to the impact of technological advancements, said PwC. This was reflected in the survey findings, with 58 per cent of Singaporean respondents worried that technology will make their role redundant and 36 per cent fearing they would not have the right skills. There is still room for optimism, with 53 per cent of Singaporeans indicating that t...

At this surreal event, Sara Netanyahu was only the sidekick – Israel News

With lyrics such as ‘To ascend from the bottom / From the garbage that I came from / To reach the sky / Glitter between my thighs,’ and the presence of Israeli PM’s wife, socialite Nicol Raidman launched her singing career in an incredible show of Israeli ostentatiousness While I didn’t attend this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, I can safely assume that the entire budget for that international pop extravaganza equaled the funds spent on the floral arrangements for the event at Tel Aviv’s Reading 3 venue last week. Like the entrance to a temple of a Greek goddess or a spiritual leader, the guests were welcomed by two 16-foot-high posters of the night’s star – a Russian-Israeli socialite known for being the reality-TV star girlfriend/fiancé of an oligarch, as well as the owner of a Tel Aviv fashion boutique aimed at the 1 percenters, and Sara Netanyahu’s bestie. Above them, her name – Nicol Raidman, spelled in English of course – in massive capital letters. I’m not mentioning any of this in cynicism or bitterness. Neither I, nor anyone else present, expected anything less of the launch of Ms. Raidman’s singing career, with a guest list that included Mrs. Netanya...

3D printers and CNC mills both use G-code, but have you ever wondered what the difference

3D printers and CNC mills both use G-code, but have you ever wondered what the difference is? Dip your toes into the world of G-code and explore the differences between 3D printing and CNC milling. CNC mills and lathes are typically used when high precision or repeatability is needed. For example, this is helpful for drilling hundreds of identical holes to create an optical breadboard. To be precise, this method of creating a part is classified as “subtractive manufacturing” since the part is created by gradually removing material. In contrast, 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process which also produces parts using computer and microcontroller control. In fact, 3D printers are also CNC machines, but given their unique popularity, they’re rarely referred to as such. In 3D printing, a part is created through the addition of material until a full part is created. In FDM 3D printing, this is accomplished by melting and extruding filament. 3D printing is very useful for creating custom parts and prototypes before a final design is reached. Coincidentally, both 3D printers and CNC machines are controlled using G-code, which is a set of commands beginning with the letter “G” ...

Martial arts instructor Matt Armstrong and his “Trash-Vengers” crew picked up thousands of pounds of trash

Martial arts instructor Matt Armstrong and his “Trash-Vengers” crew picked up thousands of pounds of trash from their Azalea Park streets and canyons in the last couple of years — free of charge. On June 5 at about noon, I rolled with Armstrong and his buddy Cindy Lapio — half of the Trash-Vengers that some refer to as a “vigilante” cleanup crew — to help pick up around their City Heights neighborhood located by Fairmount Avenue between University and Home avenues. Armstrong found a green bag in the bushes. “It’s got toilet paper …. ohhh look at this: diabetic medicine,” he said. “I use this [for my diabetes].” “It’s abandoned,” Lapio said, “…. it’s not like we can go find them and give it back to them.” Armstrong and I examined the box of medicine which appeared new. “Are those needles,” I asked; “Yeah those are needles, and it’s got medicine in all of them [vials],” he responded. “This is expensive too.” As Matt disposed of the box, two kids from Clark Monroe Middle School walked by us on the sidewalk of 43rd Street. We moved on to pick up up trash at the trailhead of Manzanita Canyon which is also known as The Manzanita Gathering Place, and the adjoining dirt lot that extend...

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Motorcycle Safety Gear. : ThyBlackMan

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> (ThyBlackMan.com) Motorcycles are fast, powerful, and dangerous machines. Whether you are a pro rider or just about to get your first bike, motorcycle crashes are real, fatal, and a risk to all riders. Even pros who have been riding for 20 years still face the risk of crashing. This is why you need motorcycle safety and protective gear. Motorcycle safety gear is the most important of all motorcycle accessories, and it should be the first thing you buy. There are different levels to gears, and for the newbies, you’ll need to know what items to buy and the minimum requirement for each. The major role of a motorcycle helmet is to protect a rider’s head while riding and during impact. There are four suitable types: Full face helmets, modular helmets, half helmets, and shorty helmets. You can opt for any of these helmets as long as they meet safety requirements, of which there are three: FMVSS218, SNELL, and ECE 22.05. The FMVSS 218 is the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218, and is a standard enforced on manufacturers. The standard ...

I. The inborn inequality of the various individuals of the human species poses the most intricate

I. The inborn inequality of the various individuals of the human species poses the most intricate problem for all interhuman relations. In any social system the main issue is how to promote peaceful co-operation among people markedly different from one another not only in bodily characteristics but also in mental capacity, will power, and moral strength. For thousands of years people knew only one method of dealing with inborn inequality: to make the superiority of the stronger over the weaker prevail throughout. The stronger beat the weaker into submission. A hierarchical order of hereditary castes was established under which the kings and aristocrats administered all affairs for their own benefit, while the lower strata of the population had no other function than that of toiling for their masters and of making life as agreeable as possible for them. The modern system of the market economy—capitalism—radically differs from the status system of the ancien régime. On the market the consumers, i.e., all of the people, are supreme. They determine by their buying or abstention from buying what should be produced, in what quantity, and of what quality. By the instrumentality of pro...

EZ 110 Punch Down Tool + RJ45 Crimper (HT-110EZ) Review & Rating

L-com’s EZ 110 Punch Down Tool + RJ45 Crimper (HT-110EZ) is a must- have for any network or telecom engineer who works with 110 blocks and RJ45 jacks. Applications, services and even hardware-based tech such as storage and servers, continue to move out of the datacenter and into the cloud. Still, many organizations have IT staff managing equipment in the datacenter and doing tasks like cabling for telephony and data. These folks are typically networking and/or telecom specialists and they lay the groundwork for smooth-running networks. To successfully create Ethernet jacks that computers connect to and for terminating Ethernet cables in a way that does not impair the data signal, IT workers need the right tools. Crimpers are used to terminate RJ45 heads—the little plastic plugs that allow an Ethernet cable to fit either into an RJ45 wall jack or the Ethernet port on a computer. I’ve had numerous experiences with crimpers that did not have the right amount of pressure to make a good crimp as well as the sometimes-flimsy punch down tool that comes with RJ45 jacks—making wiring time-consuming and frustrating. That’s why anyone doing network wiring will appreciate ...

There’s a tasteless wisecrack people sometimes make about kids with a different hair color than their

There’s a tasteless wisecrack people sometimes make about kids with a different hair color than their father. “Does the mailman have red hair?” some jokester will inevitably ask. In the 1950s, when the local dairy made home deliveries, the same jokes circulated about the milkman. And before that? Well, in the latter part of the 1890s, it was the iceman who took the blame for leading women astray. In fact, the idea of the ice-delivery man flirting with stay-at-home wives was such a trope that it inspired a hit song. Composer J. Fred Helf left Kentucky for New York in the 1890s to try his luck as a writer and seller of sheet music. Inspired by the city, he co-authored vaudeville-style comic songs such as “Please Mr. Conductor, Don’t Put Me Off the Train” and “Tillie Tootie the Coney Island Beauty.” In 1899, he scored his first big success with “How’d You Like to Be the Iceman?” It became a pop culture phenomenon—spawning answer songs, movie spin-offs, and merchandise. Soon every New Yorker and American knew the phrase “How’d You Like to Be the Iceman?” Helf had captured the spirit of the times. Ice delivery was booming in the late 1800s, particularly in big cities, where fresh ice...
